Chevrolet Monte Carlo specs: 1970-1972
The first generation Chevrolet Monte Carlo was the division’s original personal luxury coupe. It was based on Pontiac’s proven G-body Grand Prix, but for starters, the Monte’s wheelbase was shortened to 116 inches. This was a time when Pontiac was a competitor to Chevrolet and the Monte Carlo needed to be just a little different. Another point of difference was the smaller 350 cubic inch base engine. Where Pontiac was going for a performance reputation, Chevy was content with making this a gentleman’s cruiser, but they did also offer an SS version for two years in the beginning.
